Only Tunes o’ the Week!

Neko Case of the New Pornographers

It has been a solid ten days since I’ve last posted, as I’ve been terribly busy working full-time, trying to finish building our house, and going to university, part time.  Needless to say, I have had a lack of blogging time.  So it’s Saturday morning and Jim Bryson and the Weakerthans are singing about Freeways in the Frontyard and I’ve taken a little bit of time to compile at the very least, 5 songs for Tunes o’ the Week!

(As always, click on the song titles for the Youtube links)

Fresh Track:

Sam Roberts Band – I Feel YouThis is a brand new tune from the newly dubbed Sam Roberts Band (I suppose the rest of his band complained they weren’t getting enough recognition); this song is a little heavier and muddier than a lot of what Sam has done in the past but it’s an interesting cut from his highly anticipated album Colllider, which is due out May 10!

Oldie But Goodie:

Bob Dylan – Love Minus Zero/No Limit — One of my absolute favourite Dylan songs!  Bob has been praised over and over for his lyrical prowess, and this song is no exception; however, I adore the guitar progression and the harmonica work is lovely as well.  Unfortunately, I cannot find the original on Youtube, only a thousand awful covers… Sorry!

Absolutely Indie:

Hey Rosetta! – WelcomeA new tune from the fabulous Hey Rosetta!, who hail from St. John’s Newfoundland.  This song kicks you in the butt from the first beat and continues throughout most of the song, except for a slowed-down bridge, which adds a nice dynamic to the song.  This is maritime gold! Enjoy.

Leading Ladies:

The New Pornographers – ChallengersThe New Pornographers are quickly becoming one of my favourite bands.  I absolutely adore Neko Case’s voice and her melodies are ear candy.  This song is a prime example of the former and the latter.  Funny how it took a clip from the TV show “Chuck” to have this song’s tragedy really jump out at me. (Chuck clip here)

Brutally Honest Track:

Lia Ices – Love Is WonAnother “Pick of the Week” from Starbucks. I’m telling you, there are some gems in these free downloads and this song, in my humble opinion, is definitely one. Lia’s voice is hauntingly beautiful, the song has a great atmosphere and although very subtle, the guitar adds a nice, sharp texture.  So what do you think? I know that this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea (Dad!) but give it at least 3 listens.  If a song doesn’t do anything for you after the third listen, it likely won’t ever.  Or so I’ve found.  Enjoy and be brutally honest!

  1. you were right about (not everybody’s cup of tea) Lla, it is go to sleep music, not bad to look at though. Tried to listen to more of her videos on you tube. not my “cup o’ tea”.
I did hear a song by Charlie Winston while listening to 100.5 today. Not bad stuff. Heard more on you tube and thought maybe my next CD purchase.

    • You probably heard “In Your Hands” by Charlie Winston on 100.5 the PEAK. He’s got some decent tunes, I haven’t given him a full, fair listen yet though. He has a pretty unique voice. I also like his song “Like A Hobo”, it’s pretty good!
