AndrewPalooza & Tunes o’ the Week!

Hello friends, it’s been a little while since my last Tunes o’ the Week post so welcome to the latest installment!

I need to do one more quick write-up/promo regarding a fantastically awesome event that’s going on TONIGHT (June 11th) in Vancouver at the Red Room.  It’s an event called AndrewPalooza and it features some fantastic local artists such as Sweetheart, Bodhi Jones, Nadia von Hahn and headliners Behind Sapphire!  The event will also feature local comedians such as The Ruven, and will hosted by the super-awesome Carmen Cruz (former DJ of 93.7 JRFM and 100.5 the PEAK).  Carmen, along with the event creator/coordinator, Scott Graham (What’s For Lunch BC Food Blog), have also wrangled up many raffle and door prizes donated by local organizations, and there will even be a 50/50 draw!

Advance tickets (can be bought here) are $20 ($25 at the door). All proceeds are going to help Andrew get an effective but unfortunately expensive treatment for his debilitating multiple sclerosis to help get him out of a wheelchair so he can play with his 1 year-old twin boys and enjoy life as he deserves.  [More information on the Liberation Treatment can be found here:]

For those of you who would rather spend a quiet Saturday night at home, you can still buy a ticket (or two) here: and support Andrew in his fight against MS.

If you want to donate to help fight multiple sclerosis on a larger scale, you can do it at the MS Society of Canada website right here: MS Society of Canada – DONATE NOW! .  Either way you decide to donate–if you are able/willing–you will be helping someone who is suffering.

I know there are millions of people all over the world with many debilitating diseases and it would be ideal to help them all, but I know we all have only so much money.  So if you already spend time donating to Cancer research, HIV/AIDS, Huntington’s Disease, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s, or any other important cause: Thank you and bless your soul!

Ok, now on with the Tunes o’ the Week shall we? [Remember to click the song titles for links to the videos/songs!!]

Fresh Track:

Brett Dennen – Queen of the Westside — Alright, two Tunes o’ the Week posts in a row for Mr. Dennen, but this guy absolutely deserves it.  This is one of the funkiest (and I do mean funky) tunes I’ve come across in a while and I am all sorts of hooked on it.  Give it a go, I dareth thee.

Oldie But Goodie:

Blue Rodeo – Side of the Road — A bit of a downer, this one’s good for some heartache.  Let Greg Keelor’s lyrics tear apart your soul as his outro guitar solo will put it back together, all in a matter of minutes.  Mildly sloppy melodic guitar solo perfection, pretty sure he did that one in one take.

Absolutely Indie:

Behind Sapphire – Oh My, What A Fine Day — Such a lovely band, musically and personably.  These young, indie-folk, jazzy rockers are really growing on me ever since seeing them perform live at the GoGo Bean in Abbotsford a few months back. Please take a listen to this gem of a tune and immerse yourself in the beautiful harmonies and gentle strings.

Leading Ladies:

Austra – Lose ItThis type of music isn’t my typical cup of tea, but there’s no denying the haunting beauty of this tune.  I apologize to the rock ‘n’ roll purists who read my blog, but this one is catchy, rhythmic and nothing shy of stunning.  Drenched in synth and reverb, take a swim with Austra. (Another gem from iTunes “Free Single of the Week”; if you aren’t downloading these songs weekly, what on God’s green earth are you honestly waiting for??)

Brutally Honest Track:

The Sheepdogs – I Don’t KnowThese bearded boys from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan rock like they were born in 1950, played in Woodstock ’69 and dropped acid with Buffalo Springfield.  But they didn’t do any of that.  They just have an obvious adoration for classic rock and this tune proves that, as if you needed the proof.  The track is, again, not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, as is why it’s the “Brutally Honest Track” today.  If you’re into some old-time rock and some great guitar playing with ’70s-influenced vocal harmonies, you will likely enjoy this one. Let me know!

See you at Andrew Palooza tonight! Doors at 9pm!
